Back to School? Now What?

It’s that time of year when the question of the “right” career path surfaces for high school and college students, and especially for their parents. What courses will guide me on the right path? What size school should I attend? How should I prepare for college and post college interviews? The list of questions goes on…..

Students and parents alike feel overwhelmed with the questions above, and it can be difficult to know what the best path is. We’ve helped many young adults invest in their future through assessment and individual coaching. It’s important to get a sense of where the student’s interests are versus focusing entirely on what they’re “good” at. As Confucius said back in 450 BC, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Discovering the student’s passion is the answer to the above questions.

The first step to discovering the student’s passion is to complete the online Birkman Method® questionnaire and receive a 15-page Career Exploration report. This comprehensive assessment measures career interests/passion, behavioral traits, and motivation, as well as uncovers stress reactions that may hold students back. Download the sample report below:

The results are used extensively throughout the individual coaching process. We use the information to guide the student through assessing how their strengths and challenges may impact their educational and career search. We also provide presentation skills coaching to help students throughout the various stages of the interview process either for college entrance, internships or upon graduation. Students who are embarking on the interview process will find the results very helpful as they will be able to better articulate their strengths, know what areas impact their motivational needs and manage their stress behavior when those needs aren’t met. As the prospect of interviewing can be a challenge for college students or recent graduates, it’s important to prepare and rehearse in advance. We offer recommended presentation skills strategies that will help the interviewee stand out from the crowd.

By being prepared, students can be ready for the future and parents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their student has a plan!
